Medjool is a cultivar of Phoenix dactylifera, the true date palm. The Canary Island date palm is Phoenix canariensis. The names are sometimes blurred in casual conversation, but the plants should not be treated as interchangeable on a landscape plan.
Why the distinction matters
Substituting one for the other changes canopy scale, trunk mass, spacing and long-term composition. A project seeking repeated vertical rhythm may favor Medjool; a composition seeking one exceptionally heavy crown and trunk may call for Canary Island date palm. The final selection should also reflect climate, maintenance capacity, local pest pressure and availability.
